The Evolution Of The Broadband Network

The development of the internet over the years is mind-blowing, and it had created a huge impact and positive change in our lives. The Internet brought the people, countries even the inanimate object together. Development of the internet paved the way for many sectors. Today, it is impossible to think of a life without an internet even for a single day.

How did it all begin?

The first interaction with the internet was by using "Dial-up" network. The Dial-up network requires your landline connection to operate the internet. One cannot operate their telephone i.e. it would not be possible to make or take phone calls while using a dial-up connection to access the internet. The speed or the connectivity in the dial-up connection was abysmal. Since it had the weak capacity to stream any videos or make any video calls this connection slowly started to lose its market giving rise to the invention of broadband network

Broadband – A new era to the world of internet

Shortfalls of dial-up connection gave rise to the broadband connection which no longer interrupts your landline or telephone connection to access the internet. The internet in the broadband network is connected by utilizing unused telephonic lines. This line is called the Asymmetric digital subscriber lines. The speed differs with the distance you are from the ADSL. The closer you are with the ADSL, higher is your internet connectivity and the speed. Introduction of Broadband network resulted in a significant change to the growth of the internet. The connections were made using computers built-in Ethernet network or NIC expansion card. In simple terms, you need to physically connect the telephonic wire/cable to your system/laptops to get connected to the internet. Broadband allowed faster connectivity to the internet. People dependency on the internet started to overgrow after the introduction of the broadband network.

However, people couldn't access the internet while they were on travel. This led to the development of Wireless network, in short, called the "Wi-Fi". Going by the nomenclature, wireless networks are computer networks that are not connected using wire/cable. A wireless network works using radio waves to connect with the devices. This was introduced to avoid the costly and cumbersome procedure of installing the cables into the office/any buildings. With the help of wireless networks, people were able to access the internet anywhere at any time without any requirement of Ethernet cables. The innovation of wireless network into the market was a big boon to the companies, large organizations, businessman etc.

Later, wireless internet hotspots were introduced which allowed users to access the internet using a wireless local area network (WLAN) that is connected to a router.

As the demand for accessing internet accelerated, cable broadband networks were introduced as an alternative to ADSL. Under this technique, the broadband connection is used with the help of cable television wires rather than telephone wires as in case of ADSL. The connectivity fluctuates based on the number of users at the specific point. The speed and the connectivity gradually reduce when the number of users increases. This was a major disadvantage of cable broadband services.

The invention of 2G, 3G, and 4G networks

The dependency on internet resulted in the introduction of smartphones. A Smartphone is a mobile phone equipped with the feature of accessing the internet through the cellular network. The second generation cellular network "2G" was launched introducing internet services in the mobile phones. The network in 2G is connected using radio signals that are digital. 2G offered internet speed up to 56kbps. Users faced poor connectivity issue with the 2G network. This resulted in the creation of "3G" network - an upgrade of 2G network. The third generation wireless network offered potentially higher speed and connectivity to access the internet. The introduction of a 3G network in fact transformed the usage of smartphones. People started to use smartphones to access the internet than making calls. Recently, 4G was invented – an upgrade to 3G network that offers vast speed and internet connectivity allowing users to download a huge file, movies, videos within minutes.

Fiber-optic cables

In the world of technology, where internet had conquered life of human beings, users started to demand wireless broadband connection that is faster and quicker as compared to any other existing broadband connections. This is because; all the documents are now maintained electronically storing them in the digital network using the internet. This led to the innovation of network connection through the fiber optic lines instead of standard copper wires. The Fibre optic cables are made of glass or unique fiber that allows the laser light to travel down them as fast as the speed of the light. The Fibre optic cable is considered to be the backbone for the fastest internet connectivity.

This was the journey of internet connectivity over the years. High-speed internet connectivity without any disruption is the topmost priority for every single person using the internet.
